For the whodunnit lover in all of us, here are some famous Bengali detective novels which inspired a long line of exciting movies, shows and books to be created after them.

1. Satyanweshi by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay

Detective Byomkesh Bakshi is an iconic figure of Bengali fiction. Satyanweshi is the first novel in the Byomkesh series which was created by author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay. Byomkesh Bakshi meets his assistant Ajit in Satyanweshi for the first time, and they strikes up great friendship while solving the case of Ashwini Babu’s murder. The character of Byomkesh Bakshi has fuelled many a film to be made based on him, such as Satyanweshi Byomkesh, Byomkesh Phire Elo, and Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana.

2. Feludar Goendagiri by Satyajit Ray

Prodosh Chander Mitter, also known as private detective Feluda, is another brilliant sleuth we are familiar with. Feludar Goendagiri was the first short story in the Feluda series which was written by none other than Satyajit Ray. Feluda’s young cousin Tapesh, popularly called Topshe, is the narrator in all the stories. Feludar Goendagiri is set in the foothills of Darjeeling, where Feluda investigates the case of some threatening letters received by Rajen Majumdar, a retired lawyer with a penchant for collecting antiques.

3. Eagoler Chokh by Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay

Created by author Shirshendu Mukhopadhyay, Shabor Dasgupta is Assistant Commissioner in the Detective Department of Kolkata Police. He is always calm and collected, and seemingly almost devoid of strong emotions or any vices whatsoever! With the help of his assistant Nanda, Shabor solves many a case with his clinical approach and expertise in psychology. The 2016 film Eagoler Chokh was based on the novel of the same name, and starred actor Saswata Chatterjee as the great detective.

4. Kakababu Samagra by Sunil Gangopadhyay

Raja Roy Chowdhury aka Kakababu is another legendary detective character created by Sunil Gangopadhyay, who goes down in history for being well-loved across all ages and inspiring filmmakers to adapt his tales to celluloid. Kakababu is the former director of the Archaeological Survey of India, and walks with the aid of his crutch. It is said that he met with an accident and lost his leg in an incident which entailed jumping off a cliff to save his friend! His physical disadvantage however, has not dampened his spirit nor the will to embark on several exciting adventures across the world one bit. The Bengali movie Yeti Obhijan by director Srijit Mukherji starred veteran actor Prosenjit as Kakababu.
