Movie Review: Geetu Mohandas’s Moothon Is A Must Watch For All Malayalam Movie Lovers

Geetu Mohandas debuted in the Malayalam film industry as a child actress in the film Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare in 1986. She was seen in several other hit ventures like Pakal Pooram and even won the Kerala State Film Award for best actress for her performance in Akale. When she returned to the front pages in 2013, she was a director who surprised the Malayali audience with her first feature film Liar’s Dice which went on to win two National Awards. Moothon is Geetu Mohandas’s second feature film and like every other time, she has impressed the audience with her signature style.

With some of the big names from the industry working as supporting cast, Moothon is absolutely worthy of the hype around it. The screenplay written by Anurag Kashyap comes as a bonus with Geetu’s unconventional approach to film making. Moothon tells the story of Mulla, a young orphan from Lakshadweep who is in search of his elder brother Akbar.

Moothon translates to ‘the elder one’ in Malayalam, but Mulla fails to see the love and care he was expecting to find in Akbar. Mulla’s search takes him to the merciless streets of Kamathipura in Mumbai where he learns that his brother is a dreaded gang lord of the place. Nivin Pauly surprises us all with his transformation as Akbar Bhai in Moothon. Roshan Mathew and Sobhita Dhulipala also announce their phenomenal presence in the movie with their on-screen performances.

Moothon is all about the search for love and acceptance. Mulla’s journey explores themes of gender identity and retribution in the violent streets of Mumbai. Rajeev Ravi paints some marvellous frames which set the mood in Moothon. With brilliant performances and an A-lister crew, Geetu Mohandas’s Moothon is a perfect brew of Malayalam cinema that is surely going to be one of your favourites!
