National Pet Day: 10 Films Where The Pet Animals Stole The Limelight Like In Hum Aapke Hain Koun

It’s National Pet Day, the day to celebrate that one being in your life who loves you more than they love themselves. Yes, we mean your pet animals. If you’re lucky enough you either have a pet or have at least come across one in your lifetime. It is believed that these pet animal would go to any extent for their loved ones, and that’s not just limited to dogs.

Although our pawsome friends are the most prefered pets, films have shown us that any animal if treated with love and affection, would reciprocate the same to you. Even a snake! That’s right. Haathi Mere Saathi (1971)

Haathi Mere Saathi, starring Rajesh Khanna and Tanuja revolves around Raju (Rajesh Khanna), an orphan, who loves his four elephants, as well as the animals in his private zoo. Although, the star of the show here is Ramu, the eldest elephant who not only saves his life from a leopard but also sacrifices its own life to make his master reconcile with his wife Tanuja.

Teri Meherbaniyan (1985)

The pet dog Moti is the true star of the film Teri Meherbaniyan, starring Jackie Shroff and Poonam Dhillon. The story of the film revolves around Ram (Jackie) who gets murdered for being an honest man and his pet dog Moti’s revenge. Moti, with his quick thinking and razor-sharp teeth, not only sheds tears on his master’s death but also kills his master’s murderers.

Parivaar (1987)

Parivaar, starring Mithun Chakraborty, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Johnny Lever and Vikram Gokhale in lead roles features a closely-knit family (Parivaar) consisting of Birju, 2 orphans and his dearest pets – a dog and a monkey. Both the animals are shown as smart creatures who help the leads every step of the way to the extent of even driving a car to catch the bad guys.

Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

If you’re a Bollywood fan there’s no way you don’t know this film or its iconic song, ‘Kabootar Jaa Jaa’. Salman Khan’s film, Maine Pyaar Kiya, starring Bhagyashree, Reema Lagoo and Alok Nath among others is a super hit film from the ’90s. Suman requesting the bird to deliver her love letter to Prem was as iconic as the bird attacking the villain in the end because he had once tried to kill it. We never knew birds had such a strong memory!

Doodh Ka Karz (1990)

Jackie Shroff seems to have a special bond with animals. First, it was a dog in Teri Mehebaniyan and now a snake! Although a snake seems like an unusual choice for a pet, it didn’t seem so in the Jackie Shroff, Neelam, Aruna Irani, and Amrish Puri starrer Doodh Ka Karz. Sapheran Parvati seeks revenge for her husband’s death with her son, Suraj and her other son, the snake. The snake kills all the villains and at one point even leads a whole army of snakes to attack the goons.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)

When you think of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, there’s no way Tuffy doesn’t come to your mind. This Madhuri Dixit, Salman Khan, Mohnish Bahl, Renuka Shahane starrer was a super hit film with many great songs. But the star of the show was this adorable Pomeranian dog that was all over the film. In fact, if it wasn’t for him, Prem would’ve never gotten his love, Nisha.

Jodidar (1997)

Jodidar, starring Bindushree, Mithun Chakraborty and Prem Chopra revolves around an elephant Ganesh who witnesses his master being killed by a Poacher and his two brothers. Years later, when he spots his master’s murderers, he takes his revenge by killing them and preventing his new master Munna from getting killed.

Entertainment (2014)

While the ’90s was filled with puppies and doggies saving their masters and captivating the audience with their cuteness, the millennials finally got a star dog of their own in the form of Entertainment. Although Akshay Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia starrer initially featured Akhil (Akshay) fighting with the dog for his property, it later moved on to explain why a dog is called ‘man’s best friend’. The Golden Retriever in the film made us laugh during the comic scenes but also made us shed some tears with his loyalty.

Bow Bow(2019)

Bow Bow is a Tamil language film starring Master Ahaan who sets out on a journey to find his dog, who goes missing while helping two people in a crucial situation. The film explores the bond between a pet dog and its master.

Naanu Matthu Gunda (2020)

Naanu Matthu Gunda is a Kannada film starring Shivraj K. R. Pete and Samyukta Hornad in the lead roles. It revolves around the story of Shankar, an auto-rickshaw driver who adopts Gunda, an adorable abandoned dog he finds in his auto one day. The two quickly become friends and what follows is how Shankar’s love for Gunda starts affecting his personal life as well.
