Viduthalai Part 1: The Conflict Between Police and Makkal Padai!
Now, without further ado, let’s get into the plot of Viduthalai Part 1. Set in the late 1980s, the movie starts with a tragic train accident that happens in a rural village in Tamil Nadu. This results in numerous casualties. Similar to what’s seen in many drama movies, the government blames a separatist group called the Makkal Padai(People’s Army) for this tragedy.
In reality, the Makkal Padai is a revolutionary group led by their elusive leader, Vaathiyar Perumal(Vijay Sethupathi). This group is believed to have been formed to protest against the state-sanctioned exploitation of their lands by mining corporations. However, this tragic train incident prompts the government to announce Operation Ghosthunt – a mission aimed at capturing their leader Perumal, to stop the uprising.
Enter Kumaresan: The Novice Constable
Amidst all this chaos, enters Kumaresan(Soori), a newly appointed police constable who is assigned to be the new driver of a police batch named E-Company. This E-Company is one of the special units assigned to catch Perumal. Kumaresan soon learns about the complicated relationship equations between the government and the Makkal Padai. At times, he wishes to help the locals but is forced to follow the orders of his superiors. He often finds his moral compass at odds with the brutal methods employed by his superiors.
Kumaresan and Tamilarasi’s Blossoming Romance
Despite the clashes, Kumaresan tries to help the villagers in need as an when possible. In one such attempt, he rescues an elderly woman injured in a bear attack and takes her to the hospital. Later, he falls in love with a girl from the village named Tamilarasi, affectionately known as Pappa(Bhavani Sre). And guess what? She turns out to be the granddaughter of the elderly woman he helped earlier. As their romance blossoms, it becomes even more difficult for Kumaresan to follow protocols.
Police Brutality and Moral Dilemmas
With Perumal still on the loose, Operation Ghosthunt intensifies. The police start resorting to severe measures. They arrest and torture villagers suspected of aiding the Makkal Padai in an attempt to either get some information or at least turn them against Perumal. Kumaresan witnesses firsthand the atrocities committed against the poor villages. Even Pappa’s family becomes a target of police brutality.
The Arrest of Perumal?
Unlike your typical action movies, the final showdown in Viduthalai Part 1 is intense yet raw and rooted. In a turn of events, Kumaresan discovers Perumal’s hideout. He thinks that Perumal being arrested could put an end to the torture of villagers and Pappa’s family. Hence, he leads a team to arrest Perumal. After a lot of struggle, they finally capture Perumal only for Kumaresan to realize that he accidentally contributed to the cycle of oppression instead of putting an end to it.
Perumal’s Escape!
That’s not the end of it. Perumal manages to escape from police custody. He then meets up with Kumaresan and some good police officers in a forest. He reveals some important information and asks them to find the true culprit behind the tragic train accident that we saw at the start of the film. This sets the stage for all that awaits us in Viduthalai Part 2!

Viduthalai Part 2 brings you the origin story of Perumal and the formation of Makkal Padai. As Kumaresan and others struggle to maintain a balance between the police and the revolutionaries, we also get to learn a lot more about Perumal’s life. You get to witness how he turned from a common man to a lover boy to an enigmatic rebellion leader! It’s an absolute treat for fans of Vijay Sethupathi movies. What’s more?
