The death of John Lennon in December 1980 caused shockwaves across the world. The singer-songwriter and peace campaigner, who was originally a co-leader and guitarist for the legendary English rock band The Beatles, was murdered down by fanatical admirer Mark David Chapman, who is still imprisoned to this day. While he died that winter day many years ago at the age of 40, his legacy lives on via the artists he impacted and, of course, his family.

Julian, 58, and Sean, 46, are the musician’s two adult sons. He had his first son with ex-wife Cynthia Powell, whom he was married to between 1962 and 1968, and his youngest son with second wife Yoko Ono, whom he was married to until his assassination. The two married in 1969, becoming — and still are — one of the most well-known couples of our time.

Julian (full name Julian Charles John Lennon) is the late musician’s eldest son, born on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool, England to John Lennon and Cynthia Powell. Julian is a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter, filmmaker, photographer, author, and philanthropist, so the apple does not fall far from the tree. He has six rock/pop albums to his credit, including Valotte, Photograph Smile, and Everything Changes. Julian has also directed and produced a variety of documentaries, short films, and feature pictures, including Women of the White Buffalo, The Pea Shooter, and Lost Girls.

Sean (full name Sean Taro Ono Lennon) was born on October 9, 1975, in New York to John Lennon and Yoko Ono. He is John’s youngest son and Julian’s half-brother. Sean is a composer, musician, producer, and multi-instrumentalist, like his renowned father and half-sibling. He has played the piano, drums, and guitar. He has a handful of EPs as well as two rock albums, Into the Sun and Friendly Fire.

The Black Lips, Plastic Ono Band, and The Claypool Lennon Delirium are among the musicians whose records are largely produced by the younger Lennon. He also founded Chimera Music, a collaborative artist-run label and arts collective he co-founded with musician Yuka C. Honda and his long-term vocalist girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl, also known as Kemp Muhl. The Moonlandingz, Mystical Weapons, and Sean’s mother, Yoko Ono, are among the musicians signed to the label.
