Shannen Doherty on working despite having stage 4 cancer

After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, Shannen Doherty took her fans through her treatment on her Instagram handle, from shaving her head to chemotherapy. In her Instagram posts, Doherty highlighted the importance of working in minds of those battling disease every day.

Shannen, the 50-year-old actress, most famous for her role in “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Charmed” and “Heathers,” talked to Variety in an interview published recently.

She said that continuing to work as an actor helps send a message about the viability of people with cancer in the workplace.

How did she put her social media to use?

The actor would post on her social media each week. She makes her feed more interesting with her workouts, dinners with friends and family and one of Doherty’s passions images of dogs in urgent need of adoption.

“At that time, I think I needed it,” she says now about her treatment. And having been a headline in the tabloids for decades, Doherty wanted to be in control of the narrative. She understood the impact her word and work would make on her fans.

“I wanted to own my life. It’s my life! It was empowering,” she says about her working while battling cancer.

Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015. Last February, she said on “Good Morning America” that the disease has resurfaced.

Doherty’s cancer recurred in 2019, and is now metastatic Stage 4 cancer. She can be treated but not cured; she’s living with this disease for the rest of her life.

“I’m in a hermit phase.” Doherty jokes “I’m sort of taking all that energy and giving it to myself at the moment.” She says in the interview with Variety.

What she’s concentrating on is not only working, but proving to Hollywood that people with cancer can work.” Doherty says “We are employable”.

Doherty believes having cancer shouldn’t place limitations on a person’s life or career.

Doherty filmed three movies back to back this year. Namely “Dying to Belong,” which is a remake of a 1997 TV movie with Hilary Swank, “The Fortress,” which will be released next year in theatres and more.
