5 Reasons We Cannot Wait To Watch Shabana And Baba Azmi’s ‘Mee Raqsam’ on ZEE5

The directorial debut of Baba Azmi’s ‘Mee Raqsam’ has the Hindi film fraternity excited. Here’s why we too cannot wait to watch this film on 21 August 2020.

The ZEE5 Original film Mee Raqsam created quite a flutter when it was announced. The film is directed by Baba Azmi and presented by Shabana Azmi as a tribute to their father and legendary poet Kaifi Azmi. This film tells the story of a father who goes against society to help his daughter pursue her dream of being a classical dancer. The film offers an interesting take on the fundamentalists in both Hindu and Muslim religions in society, but that is not the only reason that makes this film worth a watch.

1. Baba Azmi’s directorial debut

Baba Azmi has been a renowned cinematographer in Hindi cinema for years working in films like Mr. India and Pukar. He is finally taking the leap to become a director and he is doing it with a film and story that is close to his heart. If making a directorial debut was not enough of a challenge, this film is shot in Mijwan in Eastern UP where there are no proper roads, no amenities and no infrastructure.

2. Ode to Kaifi Azmi

The title of the film is shot entirely in Mijwan, because it’s the birthplace of Kaifi Azmi. Baba Azmi said that his father once suggested he should make a film in Mijwan. For Shabana Azmi this is the first film she is presenting because it is a beautiful story about the bond between a father and daughter.

3. Spotlight on Indian classical dance

This film is unique because it brings the spotlight on Indian classical dance which is quite rare in Indian cinema these days. The film shows how religious divides continue to plague art forms that are meant to unite people, Aditi Subedi will be playing the role of a Muslim girl who wants to practice Indian classical dance.

Apart from Aditi Subedi, the film boasts of quite a strong cast of talented actors like Naseeruddin Shah and Danish Husain. Their performances will be definitely something to watch out for in this character-driven story.
