We have been fortunate enough to come across several women with some of the strongest, most determined, and powerful personalities in life. Similarly, there have been many films whose stories revolve around the lives of such women. Ahead of Women’s Day 2021, we are bringing you an interesting watchlist of some spectacular and rivetting Bengali films that showcase willful and brave women who rose above the stereotypical societal norms in their own ways!

1. Bisorjon
The 2017 film, Bisorjon, is directed by Kaushik Ganguly and stars Abir Chatterjee, Kaushik Ganguly, and Jaya Ahsan in lead roles. The film revolves around the life of a Hindu lady named Padma, and what happens after she recovers a brutally injured man from around a water body in Bangladesh. Eventually, when she realises he is a Muslim man from India, she keeps his true identity a secret from the villagers. Padma’s determination to help him out despite it causing her a huge risk is truly inspirational to watch.
2. Elar Char Adhyay
Directed by Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, Elar Char Adhay is a 2012 film starring eminent Bengali actors Paoli Dam, Shamaun Ahmed, Supratim Roy, Vikram Chatterjee, Arunima Ghosh and Indraneil Sengupta in pivotal roles. The film is a romantic-drama and its plot is based on the story of Char Adhyay, written by Rabindranath Tagore. Based on the era of a British-ruled India, the film showcases Ela’s dilemma between choosing her country or the person she loves. Watch the film to find out if Ela ends up sacrificing her love or her responsibilities on the journey of life.
3. Harano Prapti
Starring Soham Chakraborty, Paayel Sarkar and Tanusree Chakraborty, Harano Prapti is a 2020 film directed by Raja Chanda. The film focuses on the heinous sexual crimes that have been committed against women for countless years. It showcases the fight that Mainak puts up against the sex traffickers and goons that attack Maya and how Namrata, his lover, helps him do so. Watch the film to find out if Maya, Namrata, and Mainak succeed in exposing and trapping the criminals.
4. Charulata
A 1964 film, Charulata stars late Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhavi Mukherjee, Shailen Mukherjee and Shyamal Ghoshal in prominent roles. The film focuses on a love-deprived wife falling in love with another man, who happens to be her brother-in-law. It simply does a brilliant job at highlighting how even to this day, a woman’s emotional desires are not rightly acknowledged. Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s Nastanirh, Charulata explored the matter over five decades ago, making it a must-watch classic!
5. Swade Ahlade
Directed by Arindam Sil, Swade Ahlade is a 2015 film that stars Priyanka Sarkar, Biswanath Basu, and Srilekha Mitra in lead roles. The film revolves around the life of Chaitali, a 40-year-old timid housewife, in a family of a scheming mother-in-law, a formidable father-in-law, and a non-attentive husband. She questions her self-worth when life begins feeling meaningless to her. But with a zestful working woman, Kritika’s arrival, Chaitali’s life takes a turn. Swade Ahlade beautifully narrates the sudden mundaneness of life that countless housewives encounter at a certain stage of life.
