The handsome hunk who first came to Massan and won hearts from his first film itself. The actor has versatility and looks to be a superstar. His dazzling smile and down-home charm won him a strong female fanbase. The actor took no time to win critical acclaim, prestigious awards, and a national award and prove his merit.
Growing up, Vicky was shy & simple. His mother used to think that Vicky was the sincere son and sunny was notorious. But in reality, the dark horse, Vicky, was the naughty one. As a child, he wasn’t fond of the spotlight and liked to maintain a distance from it. He didn’t like to be pin-pointed for anything, good or bad. Academically, he was a good student, played sports, and took part in extracurricular activities too.
Because his family used to keep shifting homes, he is aware of worldly matters. Once, he went to his father crying and complained that the society kids were bullying him. His father slapped him and told him that he was supposed to fight his battles himself. His father always pushes him like that. Another time when he was shooting for Zubaan, he was asked to jump into an empty pool. He looked towards his father for help but all in vain.
When Vicky Kaushal used to be in school and took part in plays, dance, and other stage shows, he felt liberated. As a child who used to be reserved and people used to wonder how his voice sounded. But when he used to be on stage, everything was different. He was able to express himself and have fun. So, subconsciously, he always knew that he’d be an actor. Acting was always in his system. He just hadn’t given it a proper thought at the time.
He went on to do engineering, and while doing it, he realized that he was not going to do a regular job. He went for the interview during his campus recruitment for the sake of excitement. He wanted to experience the feeling of nervousness but never intended to join. He had the offer letter in his hand when he announced to his family that he wanted to be an actor.
After the announcement, Vicky's father told him that he needs to be 120% sure that he wants a career in acting and not have a backup to make that much effort. He tore his offer letter, took a course in acting & set off for auditions. He went for a small role in a big film and came to know where he stood. He got scared that he lacked the backup too.
He got into theatre acting to learn about acting better and kept on auditioning for commercials, short films, films, and all sorts of work. He had his bad days full of disappointment when his mother used to tell him that being successful or not is all up to him and he should believe in himself.
He worked as an assistant director for Gangs of Wasseypur, and then finally Massan happened. Seeing his film, his father’s friend called him Vicky’s dad. That was an emotional & proud moment for both of them.
Vicky Kaushal believes that the moment one wakes up in the morning, one starts acting to be a certain kind of person and reacts to his/her environment. What benefits him as an actor is that he’s an observer. He observes his surroundings and people. He observes himself, the feelings that he goes through, and his reactions. If he’s feeling overwhelmed, he’ll rush to the washroom and cry, but before a mirror to observe his face.
When a movie is offered, he always asks the writer to narrate the character's background from the earliest drafts. This helps him understand the character better. He understands how far the character is from him, geographically, mentally, emotionally, or physically. There’s no particular method he follows, but he meditates to get into his character’s head.
Vicky Kaushal is an actor with loads of talent. He does not inhibit himself from experimenting and is always open to diversifying his roles. He stays a student on sets and keeps on evolving his craft, and hasn’t set any particular goal in his career so that he can keep going further, keep pushing himself. The actor is certainly on his way to achieving superstardom.
