The Ministry of Home Affairs honoured the late legendary playback singer, SP Balasubrahmaniam with the Padma Vibhushan, for his exceptional and distinguished career. The Padma awards were announced on the eve of the Republic day. Following the announcement, star actor Chiranjeevi took it to social media to share his happiness over the news. While fans showered in love for the late legend, Chiranjeevi also noted how disturbed he was by the singer’s demise.

Sharing a smiling black and white photo of SPB, Chiranjeevi tweeted, “Elated at the announcement of ‘Padma Vibhushan’ to my beloved brother SP Balu Garu. Most deserving honour. Pained to see the suffix ‘posthumous’ in brackets. Wish he was here to personally accept it! #SPB”

During his illustrious career, SPB has sung numerous songs for the Telugu Megastar, Chiranjeevi. The honour was most deserving as the beloved singer holds the Guinness World Record for recording the highest number of songs. The count is believed to be over 40,000 songs in various languages. SPB, who was born in Andhra Pradesh, has sung and been recognized in numerous languages across the country.
SPB had earlier been honoured with the Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011 and has now been conferred with the highest honour of the Padma awards. The singer known for his unique voice, has bagged six National Awards for his songs in four different languages namely Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
The veteran playback singer had passed away amidst his treatment in Chennai on September 25, last year following complications from COVID-19. The award conferred by the President of India, Ramnath Kovind was given posthumously. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Sculptor and sand artist Sudarshan Sahoo and archaeologist BB Lal, are other winners of the exemplary honour.
