A filmmaker who started his career with documentaries and went on to win 5 National Awards for his films, Buddhadeb Dasgupta has passed away at the age of 77. The film industry had nicknamed the ace filmmaker with the moniker B. D Gupta. He was not just a filmmaker but also a poet and many film critics have found that a lot of his films too contained poetic elements to them.
Did you know that this poet-director was actually an economics professor in Calcutta before films? He was disillusioned by books and left it for the world of films He was a self-taught filmmaker who has several National Awards for Best Film to his name! Here are the names of his five films that bagged National Awards: Bagh Bahadur (1989), Charachar (1993), Lal Darja (1997), Mondo Meyer Upakhyan (2002) and Kaalpurush (2008).
The filmmaker died in his sleep on June 10, after suffering from kidney ailments for some time now. The film industry poured in to send condolences to the late poet and his family. Even Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also took to Twitter to announce her sadness over the news.

Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui also shared his grief and remembered the time he got a chance to work with the filmmaker.

As a recognised National Award recipient, even the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind expressed his dismay of BDGupta’s demise and called him “an extraordinary artist.”
Buddhadeb Dasgupta enriched our arts and culture with his world-renowned films as well as poetry – both animated by a heartfelt lyricism. In his passing away, we have lost an extraordinary artist. My condolences to the bereaved family.
