Yes it is true and for us too it is even hard to believe. Tom Cruise, the star of Mission: Impossible, was the producers’ first option for Iron Man.

Today, no one can envision anyone other than RDJ playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s brilliant superhero. However, the producers approached Tom first, along with a few others, before bringing Robert on board. In one chat, Cruise revealed why he turned down the offer

Tom Cruise as Iron Man

Tom Cruise stated that there were negotiations regarding playing Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a previous media encounter, according to a news portal. He turned down the offers because he didn’t think it would work out and he couldn’t commit to something he didn’t think was worth his time. Tom Cruise wrapped up his discussion of this Marvel Cinematic Universe character by noting that Robert Downey Jr. was perfect for the part and that he couldn’t see anybody else playing the character. Robert Jr. was not the next choice after Tom Cruise

Unfortunately, following Tom, RDJ wasn’t the MCU’s next best option. Sam Rockwell, Hugh Jackman, Clive Owen, Timothy Olyphant, and Nicolas Cage were among the other candidates for the role of Tony Stark before Robert was cast.

Aside from the MCU’s Iron Man, Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr have battled for a number of legendary roles. According to reports, RDJ was considered for the role of Lt. Pete Maverick Mitchell in Top Gun during the casting process. This role fell into Cruise’s lap, and the film and the character became instant hits. Cruise was the original option for the role of Charlie Chaplin in Richard Attenborough’s Chaplin, according to Downey. Downey received his first Academy Award nomination for this film.
