However, as Sammaekjong reaches adulthood, there is mounting pressure from the citizens, officials, and even the young King himself for Queen Jiso to relinquish her power. Despite this, Queen Jiso remains apprehensive about the consequences of ceding the throne, as influential nobles continue to harbour ambitions of seizing power. In a bold move to diminish the nobles' influence, Queen Jiso devises a plan to establish a new elite group called the Hwarang. The purpose of this group is to transcend the existing power factions and ensure the protection of her son and the throne. As the Hwarang, a collection of talented young men, come together, they embark on a transformative journey of camaraderie and personal growth. Unbeknownst to them, within their ranks lies both the true King, Sammaekjong, and Kim Sun-woo, a commoner harbouring a mysterious secret, even unbeknownst to himself. The plot of Hwarang centres around the bond that develops among these young warriors as they navigate the intricate web of palace politics, friendship, and love.
