Earth Day 2021: Reminiscing Kedarnath, A Film That Showcased How The Planet Retaliates When We Don’t Conserve It

Mother Earth has been protecting and nourishing us with all she has, right from the time humans came into existence. But all humans have been doing is exploiting nature without any fear of repercussions. And if we continue doing this, that day isn’t far when all will be lost and the world would come to an end. Earth has been reacting to our exploitation in its own way with natural calamities such as earthquakes, floods, cloudbursts, landslides etc. Today, on Earth Day (April 22), let’s take a look at Kedarnath, a film that highlighted the way we’re exploiting Earth and how life-threatening the latter’s retaliation could be.

Sushant Singh Rajput and Sara Ali Khan starrer Kedarnath was not just a commercial hit but also a film that touched many hearts. Apart from the exceptional love story between Mansoor(Sushant Singh Rajput) and Mukku(Sara Ali Khan), another aspect the film highly focused on was the adverse effects of humans exploiting nature.

The film started by showing the beautiful landscapes of Uttarakhand. People were seen travelling towards the Kedarnath temple on top of the hill. Mansoor, one of the many porters on the hill was shown taking people uphill and back.

While the love story between Mansoor and Mukku was brewing, the film subtly gave hints about how humans were destroying nature because of their selfish deeds. Mukku was seen taking off the banners and poster stuck by the hoteliers around the hill while citing that it ruins the natural beauty of the hills. Whereas a lovestruck Mansoor was seen washing off the paint from these hills.

Later in a scene, which definitely deserves a special mention, Kullu(Nishant Dahiya) Mukku’s fiance was seen proposing a plan to construct a few more hotels and shops to accommodate the increasing number of visitors to the temple. To this, a concerned Mansoor reacts by saying that we’ve not been getting permits for construction because the valley won’t be able to take the weight of any more shops or hotels. His suggestions were dismissed by the committee, although none of them were ready for what was coming for them.

Later we witnessed a huge cloudburst that led to a landslide that destroyed everything on its path. Based on the 2013 Uttarakhand floods that had devastating effects, the film didn’t fail to portray the wrath of nature when it isn’t preserved the way it should be. The film also included epic scenes like the half of a house falling apart due to heavy rains, the heaving flowing water taking over the whole Kedarnath temple and more.

If anything can be learnt from this film or the actual incident that inspired this film, is that if you take nature and everything that Earth provides lightly, the latter will retaliate with a fury that none of us would be able to handle. And if these scenes replicating the reality of the Uttarakhand floods is any indication, it clearly depicts how when Nature strikes back, even God won’t intervene as it would be the reaction to what we humans have done.
