Cancel culture is when one is publicly rejected or boycotted for their views or actions. The Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp also said that social media provides one with an instant rush of judgement

Johnny Depp has recently opened up about his feelings regarding cancel culture and social media. He said that social media provides one with an instant rush of judgment. In addition, he equated cancel culture with polluted air. Cancel culture is when one is publicly rejected or boycotted for their views or actions.

The candid press-conference

Johnny Depp spoke out his mind at a press conference at the San Sebastian Festival. To add another accolade to his list of achievements, he has been honoured with a top award, the Donostia Award.

At the Press Conference, Johnny Depp was asked more sensitive questions. The next question was about the criticism of the fest for handing Depp a Donostia Award. Certain groups of filmmakers even went to the extent of saying that the award transmitted a terrible message to the public. However, this question was rejected by the Press and the rest of the interview concentrated on his career.

Johnny Depp voices strong opinions

Johnny Depp also said that nobody was safe from cancel culture. Men, women, children have all been it’s victims. Children have suffered from various types of nasty judgements owing to cancel culture. It is also unfortunate that at a certain point, cancel culture begins to be normalised. Children begin to believe that they are wrong even when it’s not. Depp called for his fans to speak up against the injustice of cancel culture.

The injustice that Johnny Depp speaks about seems to be a reference to the libel case with a UK newspaper. The newspaper had tagged him to be a “wife-beater”. Johnny Depp had lost the case last year. The Pirates of the Caribbean star had filed a $50M defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard. It is scheduled to go to trial in the U.S. next year. Reportedly, Amber Heard is pursuing a counterclaim of $100M.
