As the Taliban took over Afghanistan, quite distressing scenes were witnessed in Kabul airport on Sunday. Citizens flooded the airports in a bid to flee the country fearing the Taliban’s rule. In the light of the takeover, several celebrities took to social media to voice their take on the matter. These celebs include Mark Ruffalo, John Cusack, Sonu Sood, Swara Bhaskar, Hema Malini, Farhan Akhtar, Gauahar Khan, etc.
Actor Mark Ruffalo is of the opinion that the Kabul airport must be ‘secured’ and Afghani human rights and women’s rights advocates who have partnered with the US must be allowed to ‘get out.’

Sonu Sood, who has been a ray of hope for many families during the Covid-19 crisis, urged the citizens of Afghanistan to stay strong. He said, “Afghanistan Stay Strong Whole world is praying for you.” Meanwhile, Soni Razdan pointed out the irony that while India celebrated its independence, another country lost theirs.
While most of the tweets from these celebrities were met with a nod from the netizens, Swara Bhaskar’s tweet landed her in controversy. Her tweet read, “We can’t be okay with Hindutva terror & be all shocked & devastated at Taliban terror.. & We can’t be chill with #Taliban terror, and then be all indignant about #Hindutva terror! Our humanitarian & ethical values should not be based on the identity of the oppressor or oppressed.”

Javed Akhtar had a rather strong opinion on the situation. He condemned the atrocities happening in Afghanistan and called the Taliban people barbarians. He said, “What kind of superpower US is that it couldn’t eradicate these barbarians called Talibans. What kind of world this world is that has left Afghan women to the lack of mercy of these fanatics.Shame on all those western countries who claim to be the saviours of human rights”
