Monday motivation: Here’s how Gundamma Katha is sending out strong messages of body positivity

In a day and age where people are craving and running behind conventionally attractive stereotypes, there are a few people like Geetha from Gundamma Katha who come along and tell us the importance of loving yourself, while also spreading strong messages about body positivity. When millions of impressionable girls and boys watch them, it reinstates for them that there is no one definition of beauty that fits all shapes and colours and that we need to embrace our real selves with utmost love.

When she was forced to marry Ram, who hated her thoroughly for her appearance, she never tried to change herself. She instead teaches Ram that it is important to have a nice personality. When she is forced to be a maid at her own house, she does the toughest of chores that require strength of the mind and the body,  without anyone’s support. When Ram’s mother schemes for Ram and her to get a divorce, she strategically gets closer to him, destroying all of the devious plans against her.

She overcomes any of the challenges with her resilience and confidence and this is why we think that Geetha would be the perfect role model for her kids and all the other ones that watch her. Every time she defeats Ram’s mother’s purposes and is closer to winning Ram’s heart, she tells us that it is your personality and not your body type that defines how attractive you are. Whenever Ram has a moment with her, he learns that it is very important to not compartmentalise based on their appearance. That is why we absolutely love the show and think that it spreads body positivity in its own ways.
