Raj Chakraborty is one of the finest directors Tollywood has ever produced. He is the epitome of talent mixed with hard work. Raj Chakraborty was born on 21 February 1975, started his career in Bengali TV, and was associated with ZEE Bangla’s show Mirakkel and the Dance Bangle Dance. He became a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) of West Bengal from Barrackpore in 2021.

Proloy (Disaster) is a 2013 Raj Chakraborty-directed Indian Bengali movie. The basis of this movie is the life and mysterious murder of Barun Biswas, a teacher and a social activist. This movie was a masterpiece and was received with praise and admiration, both for the storyline and the casting choices.

This movie is so iconic that it gained a cult following in the following years, and people still quote dialogues from this movie. Proloy is considered Raj Chakraborty’s greatest film till now.

Storyline of Proloy

A criminal gang is rampant in the village of Dukhia in Bengal. They gang rape elderly females and even underage girls. To add insult to injury, the local police stay out of this and allow these activities to occur unhindered due to the influence of the local political leader.

Barun Biswas, a social worker and a teacher, stands up to this and forms a group called “Jagaran Mancha”. However, Barun is soon murdered by these goons. Barun deeply inspired Binod Bihari Dutta before he died and he rushed to the village to pay his respects where he learns what these criminals have unleashed on the village. He tries to continue Barun’s mission against this injustice and iniquity.

This is when things take a turn when a fearless and rowdy cop Animesh Dutta is posted to Dukhia. He immediately learns and acts upon the murder of Barun, but his unconventional ways cause friction between him and Binod Dutta.

The criminals keep dying daily, and the villagers believe that the ghost of Barun has come back to punish these scum. However, Animesh suspects these murders are linked to Jagaran Mancha members as revenge for Barun’s death.

Animesh finds out that Binod Dutta was killing these criminals and rescues him from the village and ultimately decides to bury his findings as he feels that justice was served. It is later revealed that Animesh has named his son after the fearless activist “Barun”.
