Gangubai Kathiawadi is the upcoming film starring Alia Bhatt that is all set to release in theatres on February 18, 2021. The film is produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and it has landed in legal trouble. On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court has filed defamation proceedings in the criminal defamation case. In this case, the names of authors S Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges are also mentioned by the HC.

Looking back in August, the High Court had presented a temporary stay that was been extended by December 22, 2021 order. The complaint was filed by Babuji Shah, who argued to be the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi. According to the reports of the leading daily, in his complaint, Babuji Shah has claimed that the chapters on Kathiawadi in the novel titled The Mafia Queens of Mumbai were defamatory.

Justice S.K. Shinde listened to the petition filed by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Alia Bhatt, and two authors S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges. The seekers challenged the warrant published against them by a magistrate court. The court also said that the issue merits vigilance since the right to raise resentments against defamation is limited to family members or close relatives. So, it was important for Babuji Shah to prove he was one of them.

As per Justice SK Shinde, Shah was unable to present proof that he is the adopted son of Gangubai Kathiawadi. Shah did highlight that this question was important to be answered as the right to raise a grudge against name-calling was only restricted to family members or nearest families.
