Indian Screenwriter And Filmmaker Kumar Ramsay Of Ramsay Brothers Passes Away At 85

Indian screenwriter and filmmaker Kumar Ramsay of the seven Ramsay brothers passed away on Thursday morning following a cardiac arrest. He was 85 at the time of his demise. His eldest son, Gopal Ramsay, confirmed his father’s death to a leading daily. He said that his father passed away at his residence in Hiranandani, Mumbai around 5:30 am. The funeral took place later in the noon. He did not have any other underlying health issues. Ramsay is survived by his wife Sheela and three sons.

The seven Ramsay brothers were quite prominent in the horror genre between the 1970s to 1980s. The septet included Tulsi Ramsay, Shyam Ramsay, Gangu Ramsay, Kumar Ramsay, Keshu Ramsay, Kiran Ramsay and Arjun Ramsay. They have made as many as 30 films together including Andhera, Purana Mandir, Ghungroo Ki Awaaz, Purani Haveli, Bandh Darwaza and more. Now, Gangu Ramsay is the only surviving brother of all seven brothers.

As per a leading daily, the Ramsays originally hailed from Karachi. Their father, Fatehchand U Ramsinghani used to run a shop there and they relocated to Mumbai after partition. They took up filmmaking and soon became synonymous with the horror genre.

According to the daily, the brothers would divide various aspects of filmmaking among them such as direction, production, screenplay writing, editing etc. Meanwhile, their mother and wives would cook and feed the cast and crew members. In fact, they would also do their make-up. Even though most of their films were classified as B-grade films, they were quite popular among the horror-loving audience at the time.
