Veteran actress Jaya Bachchan joined the list of celebrities and politicians who called out the recent remarks made by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat about women wearing ripped jeans. Speaking on the matter, the Rajya Sabha MP stated that such unwarranted comments only encourage crimes against women. She continued that such a statement does not suit an individual who has been appointed to such a high-profile post. Adding that politicians like Rawat should lead by example, Bachchan said that judging women on the basis of what they wear is a very poor mindset, especially in today’s times.
Several well-known personalities criticised the newly appointed CM for his regressive thoughts. A campaign with the hashtag ‘ripped jeans’ has been trending for the last few days on Twitter. Actresses Gul Panag, Shruti Seth and Koena Mitra, Amitabh Bachchan’s grand-daughter Navya Nanda, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi and Shiv Sena legislator Priyanka Chaturvedi are some of the celebs who have openly supported the movement.
While addressing an audience at a workshop for protection of child rights in Dehradun recently, the BJP leader created a controversy by speaking about a ripped jeans clad woman he met on a flight who ran an NGO. He said that he was concerned about what example she was setting for society and what kind of sanskar (values) she was imbibing in others. This is not the first time the said piece of clothing has been dissed. Prior to this, actress Kangana Ranaut, seen several times herself in the attire had accused Indians of aping the western culture and embracing the shredded bottom wear.
