Kangana Ranaut recently sparked controversy by claiming that India’s freedom in 1947 was given to the country as “Bheekh,” or charity, by the British. The Panga actress made the provocative remark during a media gathering the day after earning the Padma Shri award; India gained full independence only in 2014. Kangana Ranaut used her Instagram account to respond to the news of the FIR filed against her by Amarjit Singh Sandhu, a member of the Sri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara Committee (SGSSGC).

Several politicians have demanded an apology from her, as well as a request that she recently received the Padma Shri award be revoked, stating that her statements diminish the sacrifice of all freedom fighters who have lost their lives for the country. In another case, six senior Congress leaders in Assam filed a police complaint against Kangana on Thursday, accusing her of making disparaging statements about Mahatma Gandhi and the freedom struggle.
