We are soon going to celebrate International Women’s Day. With some of the most extraordinary stories and women-centric content lined-up, ZEE5 will be #BreakingTheBarriers in the month of March. Besides the amazing stories of these shows and movies, one other thing that also captures our attention is their dialogues and quotes that give us a reality check and inspire us time and again. Recalling some of those, here are seven of the best quotes delivered by female characters that kept us going.

Geet – Jab We Met

Kareena Kapoor Khan earned a lot of love for her role as Geet in Jab We Met. The audience fell in love with Geet’s personality and her outlook on life. “Main apni favourite hoon!” Her idea of self-love is still inspiring to everyone. Besides that, she also had a lot of dialogues in the film that gave a positive outlook on life. One of them is this one: “No one has control over what is going to happen in future. In such a scenario, I do what my heart says.”

She follows this up with a really good thought: “I do what my heart says so that in future I don’t ever blame someone else for how my life is.”

Devika – Dev DD 2

Devika Dharam Dwivedi (Asheema Vardaan) is known for her courage, sass and best comebacks. After going through multiple heartbreaks, she decided that her happiness is not dependent on who enters and who leaves her life. However, she has the best thing to say about how society has structured women’s idea of happiness: “It’s all because of these fairy tales. The world has made us women believe that we can only get happy when a prince charming gives us a perfect relationship. Because women’s happiness is incidental, isn’t it?!”

Shashi – English Vinglish

English Vinglish revolves around the journey of a woman, Shashi (Sridevi), who learns English and explores herself while visiting her sister in New York. But before that, Shashi had been constantly facing insults and mockery from her husband and her daughter for not being able to speak English. When she finally learns the language, she gives a speech that subtly taunts her daughter and her husband for the way they treated her. That last speech of hers has a separate fanbase. But this one other dialogue also speaks volumes about her situation and about the world in general. “Everything can be taught. But how does one teach not to hurt someone’s feelings?”

We all know someone who needs a lesson of this, don’t we?

Avni – Veere Di Wedding

Sonam Kapoor’s character, Avni, in Veere Di Wedding, perfectly captures the essence of how society has put certain expectations on women and expects them to abide by those. She says, “No matter how much we achieve or study, our lives won’t be considered complete unless we get married!”

Aarti – Mulk

In this hard-hitting social film Mulk, Taapsee Pannu plays the role of advocate Aarti Mohammed, who is fighting the case for her father-in-law’s family. While trying to prove that the Mohammed family is innocent, she drops a lot of strong statements in the court. And among these, one of her best dialogues in the film is: “Us and them don’t make the nation. We make the nation.”

Bitti – Bareilly Ki Barfi

Kriti Sanon in Bareilly Ki Barfi plays the role of Bitti Mishra, who is a tomboyish girl. She has a cool and cheerful outlook on life and a lovely relationship with her father. At the beginning of the film, she is approached for multiple marriage proposals and either the families or the to-be grooms turn out to be jerks. She refuses to take their rubbish and keeps facing rejections. She also keeps getting questioned about her behaviour and ways of life, to which she gets emotional and says, “It would’ve been better if I was a guy, wouldn’t it? No one would have asked questions about what I choose to do.”

She also follows it up by saying, “No one would have bothered if I drank or smoke or stayed out of the house till late at night.” Well, it still is the reality of our society, and that’s why this scene hits hard.

Chandro Tomar – Saand Ki Aankh

People always mock the fact that women feel hesitant in revealing their ages. Chandro Tomar in Saand Ki Aankh, played by Bhumi Pednekar, gives an effective response to this question posed by the world. Chandro Tomar says, “Why would there be hesitation in revealing true age? The thing is, a woman can not count the years of her age that she has lived only for herself.”
