HC Rejects Kangana Ranaut’s Plea Seeking Quashing Of Javed Akhtar’s Defamation Case

The Bombay High Court on September 9, 2021 dismissed the plea filed by actor Kangana Ranaut seeking quashing of the criminal defamation proceedings initiated against her by a court here based on lyricist Javed Akhtar’s complaint. High court judge, Justice Revati Mohite Dere, who had on September 1 reserved her order on the plea, said the applicant’s (Kangana Ranaut’s) petition “stands dismissed” Here’s a little backside of the case for the ones who’re not aware about the case. Javed Akhtar had filed a criminal defamation case against Kangana because of a television interview she had given last year. In the interview, Kangana had spoken about her conversation with Javed Akhtar at his house, where a doctor was also present. Javed Akhtar had told the court that Kangana Ranaut had made defamatory comments against him in the interview with Arnab Goswami.

The statement of the doctor is also beem recorded by the police amd taken under consideration. However both, Javed and Kangana had missed one particular hearing in March 2021. Javed was under the weather and Kangana couldn’t come due to some personal reasons which needed more attention. Ranaut had challenged the defamation proceedings that were initiated by the Andheri Metropolitan Magistrate’s court earlier this year, saying that the court had failed to apply its mind to the case through her counsel Rizwan Siddique.

Javed Akhtar’s counsel Jay Bharadwaj, however, told the high court that the magistrate had directed for the police inquiry after going through the lyricist’s complaint and excerpts of Ranaut’s interview, in which she had made the alleged defamatory comments. In December 2020, the court directed the Juhu police to conduct an inquiry into Akhtar’s complaint against Ranaut and then initiated criminal proceedings against her, and issued summons to her in February this year.
