Mee Raqsam (I Dance) is Baba Azmi’s directorial debut dedicated to his father, Kaifi Azmi. This film is a touching story of a father and daughter from a small town of Mijwan, Kaifi Azmi’s hometown. Mariyam (Aditi Subedi) wants to learn Bharatnatyam but she faces opposition from Hindu and Muslim fundamentalists in her town. Naseeruddin Shah plays the role of the Muslim fundamentalist, Hashim Seth. Danish Husain plays the role of the sensitive and inspirational father, Salim.

Hritik Roshan loved the life-affirming message of following your dream. Vidya Balan shared a tip that you can all use ‘When Shabana Azmi presents a film, you watch it’. Ashutosh Gowarikar said ‘The film is a poignant story of a father and daughter’ as well as ‘a strong comment on religion, secularism and art.’ Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor who worked with Baba Azmi in their films like Dil and Beta, also shared their enthusiasm for the film.
The critics also loved the film for it’s emotional story and socially relevant message. While the Quint said that the film was ‘A strong case against fundamentalism’ while IWM Buzz said the film is a ‘Glorious father-daughter drama’. This simple film touches upon some taboo issues in our society and the critics lauded that. Scroll said the film ‘Flirts with nightmares but settles for optimism and hope’ and National Herald said the film ‘dares to address the forbidden’.
