It’s that time of the year again when farmers worship the Almighty for the first harvest of the year. yes, we are talking about Makara Sankranti, which is celebrated with much fervour across the country. In Karnataka, it is known as Sankranti or Suggi Habba and everyone rings it in by worshipping the Sun god as a token of gratitude.
What’s an Indian festival without some delicious food. Staying true to tradition, here are five tasty recipes that are made during Sankranti:
1. Gasagase payasa:
This rice kheer is a nutritional dish with poppy seeds as one of the main ingredients. It also comprises rice, jaggery, milk and coconut. This sweet kheer is relished during the days of festivities in tumblers due to its thin consistency.
2. Shenga holige:
This Holige or peanut poli is a sweet dish recipe which uses wheat flour as the base of the dish. Rather than the traditional grated coconut and jaggery filling, which is used in puranpoli, this is made with a crushed peanut and jaggery filling along with roasted sesame seeds and cardamom powder. The best part is that they have a long shelf life and can be relished much after the celebrations are over.
3. Avalakki sihi huggi:
Avalakki sweet pongal is a common dish prepared by mixing beaten rice, gram dal, jaggery, coconut, milk, ghee, cashew and raisins together and cooking it. In our opinion, it’s the perfect sweet ending to a meal.
4. Ellu unde:
Ellu Unde or til laddu is prepared using sesame seeds, jaggery and desiccated coconut and sesame seeds. This sweet dish is a very easy laddu to prepare and it is one of the most dishes of the season. It also works as a handy snack that you can munch on to beat the mid-meal hunger.
5. Avarekulu bath:
Avarekalu bath is a tasty rice recipe prepared using avarekalu (hyacinth beans), brinjal, tamarind, jaggery, coconut and masala powder. This pulao works as a one-dish meal that satiates your savoury cravings and is the perfect beginning to follow up with the above desserts.
