AB de Villiers Retires From International Cricket; Coach Mark Boucher Reveals Why

According to Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers is unwilling to occupy a spot that another skilled player could have in the national team.

South African cricketer AB de Villiers is one of the most skilled sportsmen of all time. Thus, his decision to retire from international cricket is disappointing for the fans of the game as well as that of the player. While he had made the announcements regarding his retirement back in 2018, many were still expecting him to return. However, the board of Cricket South Africa has officially confirmed that AB de Villiers will not play international games anymore.

Back in 2018, AB de Villiers had declared that he was retiring from international cricket, which was largely disappointing for fans already. But speculations of a possible return to it had been going around ever since. May 18, 2021, was being awaited significantly for an update on the cricketer’s final decision. The management of Cricket South Africa held a meeting with AB de Villiers and Mark Boucher, the coach of the South African cricket team on May 18. The result of which, although disappointing for fans, was that AB de Villiers had finalised and stuck to his decision of retiring from international cricket.

Although the cricketer’s form in IPL 2021 recently was very impressive, he is not willing to play for the South African national team any longer. Coach Mark Boucher revealed that AB de Villiers was resistant towards taking away a spot that another talented player would fit well in. According to Mark, this was why the cricketer was no longer interested in playing international games for the team. Mark stated that AB de Villiers is undeniably one of the best cricketers in the world, especially in the T20 format. Back in May 2018, the cricketer had said that he was rather tired and would want to take a back seat from playing.
