Zindagi’s original on ZEE5, Churails picked as Best Web Series of 2020

Churails- the first Indo-Pak original creation under the brand Zindagi is selected as the Best Web Series of 2020 by reputed UK publication Eastern Eye. Apart from the above, the show also featured in lists of best shows of 2020 by key critics & publications namely Film Companion, Scroll, Aaj Tak, News 18, GQ, DNA.

Since its launch on ZEE5 in August, the show has been creating waves not just in India & Pakistan but internationally as well. Churails was among the few shows from the subcontinent to be featured in publications of repute like BBC, Variety, The Guardian and The Economist. ‘Churails’ is a reminder why it is crucial to promote exchange of arts and culture across the conflicted India-Pakistan border – Stated ‘The Hindu’ while ‘Lesbian lovers and a boxer in a burqa: a new look for Pakistani TV’ – said The Guardian. The Express tribune called it a feminist masterpiece and the Economist called it a TV series about female vigilantes that broke taboos in Pakistan. Critics welcomed the show for its solid storyline that puts strong women at the centre who challenge hypocrisy of patriarchal societies that vanquish women and their rights.

Churails also garnered attention from key directors and actors from both sides. Anurag Kashyap added it to his watchlist after learning it’s directed by Asim Abbasi while director Hansal Mehta tweeted about watching a few episodes and loving it. He said, “It is a lot of fun, very commendable, sharp and super cool”. Actress Sanam Saeed of Zindagi Gulzar Hai fame said, “Dialogues, relationships in ‘Churails’ are representative of real life”.

Directed by Asim Abbasi, Churails narrates the story of four self-proclaimed CHURAILS who come together to open a covert detective agency to expose cheating husbands amongst the city’s elite. As their operations expand, they come to be saviours of abused, harassed and mistreated women. The gripping and fast-paced storyline covers myriad issues such as child abuse, sexism, domination of class and race. It stars Sarwat Gilani, Nimra Bucha, Yasra Rizvi and Mehar Bano in the lead roles and premiered on Zee5 as the first Zindagi Original.
