Mugilan, starring Karthik Raj and Ramya Pandian premiered exclusively on ZEE5. The series directed by Shri Ram Ram is an action-thriller that traverses between the 70s and the present time, depicting the life of a gangster named Mugilan. The story of the series starts with a middle-aged underworld kingpin who lets his rage overpower love for his family in a weak moment. He murders bureaucrats in broad daylight, which forces him to flee the country. Mugilan and his family leave Chennai and go underground in Dubai. Meanwhile, back at home, police issue a search warrant for Mugilan and decide to put him behind bars. Mugilan, that starts with a murder investigation, looks promising in the few episodes. However, with each episode, the series becomes impalpable. Muglian’s paper-thin screenplay fails to build the suspense, which makes the series a one time watch.

Karthik Raj and Ramya Pandian who essay the role of Mugilan and Maheshwari respectively play pivotal roles in this gangster-drama. Three different phases of Mugilan and Maheshwari’s life are shown in the series. They pull off the get-up and demeanour with finesse. Actors like Aadukalam Naren, Gayatri Rema, and Robert also have impactful characters that will make a place in the heart of the audience. Interestingly, Karthik Raj has shed off his boy-next-door image successfully to essay the role of a gangster. His chemistry with Ramya Pandian and Gayatri Rema is refreshing and delightful.
Mugilan’s screenplay is written by Sri Ram Ram and traverses through three timelines- 1996, 2005, and 2016. The story of Mugilan traces the journey of an underworld kingpin who starts his journey as an accountant and leads his way forward with the help and guidance of his partner. However, things get intense when Mugilan is the prime suspect in a murder investigation. The dialogues of Mugilan are written by Ragav S and Saravanan VN. Mugilan is directed by Sri Ram Ram and edited by Tamil Arasan who previously worked in movies like Nenjamundu Nermaiyundu Odu Raja (2019), among others.
