Christian has lost films like This Boy’s Life and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape to Dicaprio throughout the years. Christian had auditioned for the role of Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet, but was told that they had opted to put a different actor in the role. Christian Bale famously auditioned for the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic, a position that went to Leonardo Dicaprio and catapulted him to stardom. According to Cheung, Bale was passed up for the position because director James Cameron didn’t want two British lead actors.
Bale will eventually outshine Dicaprio by landing the main part in American Psycho, a film that Dicaprio had previously expressed interest in.
