We all love watching a good movie where our favourite actor fights the goons and saves the day. But have you ever imagined how the same movie would have turned out if the action hero was a female? Well, many a time, the female lead’s role is limited to being a supportive character for the hero’s escapades and join him for a good dance sequence. However, there are certain movies that actually put the spotlight on the female characters and they are equally good as any other blockbuster films. Here are some of the movies, that depict strong female characters, for you to watch on this women’s day.

Magalir Mattum

Everyone loves a good comedy-drama, and Magalir Mattum that released in 2017 is just that. Starring Jyothika, Urvashi, Bhanupriya, and Saranya Ponvannan, in the lead roles, the movie is a series of comedy of errors bound to make you laugh out loud. The story revolves around Prabha, and her relationship with her would-be mother-in-law as she decides to take them along with her childhood buddies on a trip. The movie is a must-watch for any lover of ‘feel-good’ watches.

Kolamaavu Kokila

The female protagonist gets involved in a drug deal gone wrong and the mafia is now on the lookout. Sounds like a good movie, right? Kolamavu Kokila released in 2018 is a dark comedy starring superstar Nayanthara in the lead. Telling the tale of Kokila who is forced into the drug smuggling business to afford her mother’s medical treatment, the movie is a must-watch. While, the world around her burns, the silent yet cunning attitude of Kokila is a joy to watch. Nayanthara simply aces the role with ease.

Lakshmi

A dance-based movie, Lakshmi that released in 2018 revolves around Lakshmi, who is focused to build her career around her passion for dance. Ditya Bhande as the young protagonist does a great job as she showcases some of the most amazing dance moves throughout the movie. The film also talks about how the young girl manages to pursue what she wants while staying on her mother’s good list. The film features Prabhudheva and Aishwarya Rajesh in major roles.

Virus

Although, not an out and out female-centric movie, Virus shows some of the strongest female characters you will ever see in a movie. The dubbed thriller drama is based on the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala. The story revolves around the impact of the unknown deadly virus and how the government officials and medical front workers turn heroes in defending against the virus. The film is lead by Parvathy Thiruvothu who is focused at finding the root of the virus outbreak. The film that also stars Kunchacko Boban and Tovino Thomas, see Revathy and Poornima Indrajith portray some of the finest real-life hero characters.

Dora

In the mood for a good horror thriller? Dora is just the movie for you. Starring Nayanthara in the lead, the movie revolves around Pavalakkodi and her father Vairakannur who live together in a small house. She stumbled upon a car that she buys, only to know later that the car is possessed by a spirit of a dog called Dora. What follows for her and the spirit makes the rest of the movie.

Nerkonda Paarvai

A remake of the Bollywood blockbuster Pink, Nerkonda Paarvai released in 2019 is a drama revolving around an FIR registered against the woman for conducting self-defense. Starring Ajith Kumar, Shraddha Srinath, Abhirami and Rangaraj Pandey in the lead roles, revolves around how Meera, tries to defend herself in a case against a spoilt brat who filed an FIR defaming her and her friends, over ignoring an fighting back against his advances. The movie talks about a relevant issue in society and is a must-watch for every woman out there.

Bhaagamathie

Starring Anushka Shetty in the lead, Bhaagamathie is a horror-thriller released in 2018. The superhit movie revolves around the plot set by some political leaders. These unethical men decide to question Chanchala, a close confidante of minister Eswar Prasad, and lock her up at a haunted house. The house which once belonged to Queen Bhaagamathie has its own mysteries which is unveiled as a chain of paranormal activities takes centrestage. The movie is a trilingual and is considered to be a classic by fans of the horror genre. Anushka carried the film with utmost grace on her shoulders.
