In an exclusive interview, Sonal spilled the beans on playing Madhubala, her role in Skyfire, going de-glam as Meenakshi and more. Here are the excerpts:
1. What attracted you the most about Skyfire?
The most important thing that immediately caught my interest was that the concept has never been seen before in India. I am a person who has a lot of conspiracy theories, I am always thinking what if this is happening because of that. The world is going through global warming, the weather changes that we are facing, I have my personal conspiracy theories. When I read the script, I thought if I’d see this as an audience it would get me thinking about the weather change and things that are happening politically. It is a very intriguing concept.
2. The series marks you web debut…
A thing very important for me to make my web debut was I didn’t want to do a film or a series where I am there as just a prop. My role in Skyfire is very important and I am there with everyone cracking it together, so I am not there just looking pretty and filling gaps. Secondly, my look is very different. I have never been seen like that. All these things put together made it very interesting and very challenging.
3. You have gone de-glam for your role in the series. Tell us about the prep.
It is absolutely non-glamorous. We were very clear that I will be with no makeup. The hair is different but we have literally used no makeup. This girl is a historian, she is Delhi-based, and I have grown up in Delhi. I have seen women in Delhi, girls from Lady Shri Ram College, I used those little references in my head. I took bits from my own experience for the role and look. It is a completely de-glam look with a lot of meat and substance, asserts the actress who was last seen in JP Dutta’s film Paltan.
4. You have worked with a bunch of actors from Emraan Hashmi to Anushka Shetty. Who is your favourite?
Emi (Emraan Hashmi), of course, is going to be very special to me because he is my first co-star so he will be special, always.” Besides him, she is a huge fan of megastar Amitabh Bachchan who she acted with in Bbuddah… Hoga Terra Baap. “The person I respect the most is Mr. Bachchan. He is an institution in himself. He is someone everyone must learn from. He has the energy of a 20-year-old, his professionalism, his acting capabilities, he himself as a human being – he is just 10 on 10 in everything,” said Sonal.
5. Fans on social media have compared you to Madhubala. How do you take such compliments?
Growing up when anyone would ask me what is the best compliment I have ever received, I wouldn’t know what to say. But the fact that my fans feel I resemble her is the biggest compliment I have ever got. Now I have an answer to the question I feel!
6. If you were to essay a personality in a human drama, who’d it be?
Madhubala ji of course. She has been my favourite and I think she has had a very interesting life full of ups and downs. I’d love to play her.
7. 5 summer essentials you cannot do without
A pair of denim shorts for sure, a casual t-shirt, sneakers, a nice cotton summer dress and lots of linen.
8. Since you come from one of the royal families of Uttar Pradesh, which is your favourite traditional food dish?
Dal-baati-churma and ghevar – I just cannot resist these!
