Madonna is emulating the great Marilyn Monroe for her latest cover photo, as she has done in the past. Find out more about the pop star’s homage to the late great

Madonna is paying tribute to the great Marilyn Monroe once more.

Marilyn Monroe’s classic “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” routine from the 1953 film Gentleman Prefer Blondes was recreated for her “Material Girl” music video in the 1980s, and the pop artist has channelled the Hollywood icon in numerous ways in the past. Madonna also wore an ultra-glam ensemble inspired by the late actress at the 1991 Oscars, which she shared with Michael Jackson.

In the year 2021, Madonna is the new cover star of V Magazine’s winter issue, portraying the star of Some Like It Hot. On the cover of the magazine, the “Like a Prayer” singer appeared nearly naked, replicating Marilyn’s final photoshoot before her untimely death in 1962 at the age of 36.

Madonna was shown on a ruffled bed, wearing fishnet stockings, white satin gloves, and a diamond cross necklace on the cover of the magazine. In other photos, the artist sported a luxurious fur coat and an off-white latex corset. What about her golden locks? It was curled to perfection in the Marilyn Monroe style.

Photographer Steven Klein detailed the photoshoot’s goal. This photo essay was inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s “The Last Sitting,” a shoot she did with photographer Bert Stern, he told the magazine. “They shot at the Bel Air Hotel before she died in 1962.” A three-hour session turned into a three-day marathon, with work being done at all hours of the day and night. Drinking, laughing, photographing, editing, sleeping, and then photographing again–a private event between two artists that happens seldom these days.

They weren’t looking for exact replicas of the images; instead, they wanted to learn more about the photographer-subject relationship. There’s talk on friendship and the creative process, as well as how art may imitate life and vice versa.

According to Steven, Madonna Bert was intrigued by Marilyn’s blazing vulnerability at the moment when he showed her the photographs. They booked a hotel suite in order to capture the connection between a celebrity and the camera, as well as the mystery and magic of this creative cooperation. They feel that they’ve done credit to Bert Stern and Marilyn Monroe’s amazing work. Photographer explained.
