Baba Azmi makes his directorial debut with Mee Raqsam, an ode to his father Kaifi Azmi. Shot in Kaifi Azmi’s hometown of Mijwan, this film tells the story of a young Muslim girl who wants to follow her dream of learning Bharatnatyam. She faces opposition from the conservative Muslim and Hindu elders in the town, but stands strong with her father’s support.
5. Chintu Ka Birthday
Chintu Ka Birthday is another emotional drama with a child at the centre of it. This film produced by AIB is another film that gained acclaim internationally. Chintu Ka Birthday is the story of an Indian family stuck in the middle of war-torn Iraq. They want to have one moment of happiness celebrating their youngest son Chintu’s birthday but the US military barges in and takes over their home.
6. Bamfaad
Bamfaad is the classic story of lovers on the run from the world. Aditya Rawal and Shalini Pandey play the leading romantic couple in this film. This film depicts some of the realities of life in Allahabad through the lives of the main characters. This love story mixes passion, violence, guns, and politics to deliver a ‘Bamfaad‘ hit.
7. Ghoomketu
Ghoomketu is a quirky comedy film to lift your spirits after the heavy dramas and thrillers. Nawazuddin Siddiqui stars in this film as a man who runs away from his home to become a scriptwriter in Bombay. This film shows the funny quirks of the film industry and has a unique set of characters. Anurag Kashyap plays the role of a lazy and corrupt cop whose job is on the line if he doesn’t find Ghoomketu.
8. Yaara
Yaara is an action-packed gangster film directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia. Starring Vidyut Jammwal, Amit Sadh, Vijay Verma, Shruti Hassan, and Kenny Basumatary, this film is a story about a gang of robbers, drug smugglers, and gun runners in the 70s.
