Uttam Kumar is a name that needs no introduction when it comes to Bengali cinema. The iconic superstar continues to shine ever bright even today– more than 40 years after his death in 1980. The late Bengali hero starred in such classics as ace filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s Nayak and Chiriyakhana. Today, on his birthday, here are some Uttam Kumar-starrers that you will enjoy watching right here on ZEE5!

1. Protisodh

Protisodh is a 1981 Bengali action drama film starring Uttam Kumar, Sukhen Das, Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabitri Chatterjee. The story revolves around Ranjan, whose uncle Sanatan conspires to get him arrested. Years later when Ranjan is released, he sets out to find his father. He befriends villagers and make a plan to seek revenge on Sanatan.

2. Anand Ashram

Anand Ashram is a 1977 Bengali romantic movie starring Ashok Kumar, Uttam Kumar, and Sharmila Tagore. A wealthy landlord disowns his son who is a doctor, for marrying a poor girl against his wishes. Later, the landlord’s servant brings home a baby who was abandoned. Both the landlord and his servant raise the child as their own. 3. Deya Neya

Deya Neya is a 1963 Bengali drama film starring Uttam Kumar, Tanuja, Kamal Mitra and Tarun Kumar. Prasanta, son of an industrialist, wants to pursue a career in music. His father disapproves, so he leaves home and becomes a singer under the pseudonym Abhijit, while working as a chauffeur in a rich household. There, he meets Suchi, who is a great fan of his music. When Prasanta finally makes a public appearance, Suchi and his parents realise the truth. His father accepts him and he marries Suchi.

4. Amanush

Amanush is a 1975 Bengali romantic movie starring Uttam Kumar, Sharmila Tagore, Prema Narayan, and Utpal Dutt. Madhusudan’s life is perfect until he is framed and imprisoned. He is rejected by everyone including the girl who used to love him dearly. Unable to deal with the situation, he takes to alcohol and turns to a lifestyle of ruin. Will he ever lead a normal life again? Will Rekha forgive him and enter his life? Or is Madhusudan really guilty?

5. Samadhan

Samadhan is about Harihar, Badal and Sajal– three men living vastly different lives. Harihar, an honest man struggles to earn a living. Badal, who is unable to deal with poverty, turns to smuggling while Sajal becomes a taxi driver to make ends meet.
