Julia Roberts’s Busy, Blissful Family Life as a Mother of Three Teenagers

Julia Roberts put her acting career on pause around 17 years ago when she became a mother.

Of course, even Roberts’ back burner was still the stuff of Hollywood fantasies, but following the birth of her twins, Hazel and Phinnaeus, on Nov. 28, 2004, there was no way she could not centre her universe on her children. And it all began before they were born, with a cameo as a “pregnant Julia Roberts” in Ocean’s Twelve in 2004.

In the Wall Street Journal, Mike Nichols, who directed Roberts in the films Closer (2004) and Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), commended her role as Mom, stating, “Julia has done a fantastic job of keeping their personal lives together. The storey is told by the trivial details. No one is sweeping their hall or working on their house when you visit them. Julia, Danny, and the kids are the only ones present, and there are toys all over the house. She has a tendency to drift away from the centre.”

Roberts acknowledged that taking a break from work to focus solely on motherhood was an “incredible luxury,” telling Gwyneth Paltrow on The goop Podcast in October 2018 that she felt “she had earned that time to do whatever she wants with it, with these new people in our house” after 18 extremely busy, fruitful years of making movies.

Even if you didn’t experience the fabled nature of her work directly during the days of Pretty Woman, Notting Hill, or Erin Brockovich, the storied nature of her career could have been difficult to fathom.

She attributed their fuss-free palates to all of their travelling—”when you travel, you have to eat what you’re kind of given”—but she also pointed out that their mother is a fantastic chef. Roberts’ children are getting the full regular-mom treatment at home, despite her tenure as Hollywood’s highest-paid actress.
