Mathil Movie Review: A Thought-Provoking Social Drama That Shouldn’t Be Missed

The latest ZEE5 original Tamil movie Mathil directed by Mithran Jawahar stars K.S. Ravikumar and Mime Gopi in prominent roles. K.S. Ravikumar plays the role of a common man, Lakshmikanthan while Mime Gopi plays the potential MLA Senapati who has his way with anything he wants. The movie falls under the genre of political drama and does a great job at it. With relatable characters and circumstances, the movie portrays a problem that every common man might have.

Mathil follows the story of Lakshmikanthan who builds a house after years of saving. As a child, he sees his father die, without having his own house which makes him the victim of several hardships. This is what leads him to build a house for his family when he starts growing old. As he builds a house, he finds that Senapati who is a local politician and an MLA candidate uses Lakshmi’s wall for writing his party’s slogans and painting his picture.

Lakshmikanthan does everything that a common man can do, to stop his shenanigans and fails several times, but his persistence is extremely admirable. The movie also stars Kathadi Ramamurthy and Lollu Sabha Swaminathan Lakshmi’s friends, and co-actors from the same theatre group. How he gets the politician to rectify his mistake forms the rest of the story.

When you think of a middle-aged middle-class man, you are bound to think about K.S Ravikumar. The veteran actor put forth a mind-blowing performance. Mime Gopi pulled off all the grey shades of a villain, as Senapathi and it all seemed extremely effortless. Kathadi Ramamurthy who plays a deaf actor from Lakshmi’s theatre group and Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, give us comic relief whenever they are on screen.

The movie is helmed by Mithran Jawahar who is known for comical and romantic movies like Meendum, Oru Kadhal Kadhai. With Mathil, he explores a completely different genre, but he nails it just like any of his other movies. The movie was written by Jothi Arunachalam and Ezhichur Aravindan who make sure that the dialogues in the movie never feel unnatural. There is an explanation for everything in Mathil’s universe and no string is left untied.

The cinematography by G. Balamurugan, makes us feel like the movie is taking place next to us. L. V. Muthukumarasamy makes sure that his music completely transports us into Lakshmi’s world and is as mellifluous as it gets. The editor M. Thiyagarajan deserves all the praises, for keeping the movie crisp, especially when there was scope for it to be dragged.

All in all, Mathil is a great watch and has the right amount of thought-provoking that you need to start the new year with. As the elections just went by, the movie could not have come to us at a more perfect time. The movie is light at its delivery and yet leaves a huge impact on its audiences.
