Rihanna recently set the Indian social media ablaze with a tweet addressing the farmers protest which has been going strong since the last few months. Through the Tweet, she questioned her followers why people weren’t speaking up about the protest and the issues they have been trying to highlight. Her tweet started a chain reaction where a variety of renowned celebs from different fields of work including Greta Thunberg, Mia Khalifa and Meera Harris, put for their opinions on the topic. The Ministry of External Affairs did not take the incident lightly and decided to release an official statement regarding the matter. Twitter has also lately been in the news ever since the Government of India asked the social media platform to pull down tweets mentioning farmers’ protest.

It has been a concerning week for India as the country has lately been divided over the farm laws and the farmers’ protest. According to the video attached above, Bollywood celebrities recently stood up in favour of the government as they have been of the stance that they do not want any external intervention in matters that concern India and its citizens. Actors and cricketers like Virat Kohli, Karan Johan, Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma amongst others backed the union government after MEA released an official statement. They were all seen using the hashtag, ‘#IndiaAgainstPropoganda’ and ‘#IndiaTogether’ as they spoke up against Rihana and her tweet.

Twitter has also been in the news lately as the Government of India asked the social media platform to get rid of tweets that mention farmers genocide. The government also warned that they would take strict action if the guidelines were not followed asap. Last week, Twitter had pulled down close to 300 accounts for violating their policies. The harsh move came in after the Republic Day violence that shook the country. The Govt of India has also promised a reward of 1 lakh for anyone who gives out information on Deep Sidhu, who was involved in the Republic Day flag hoisting controversy.
