Golden Globes awards all set to happen even after controversies

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced this Friday the traditional calendar and the submission deadlines in different categories for the 79th annual Golden Globe awards. The Golden Globe awards are all set to be held on January 9th, 2022. The award ceremony was faced by many controversies over racism and sexism in the organisation and their lack of diversity in HFPA.

The prestigious award ceremony was all set to be aired on their telecast partner NBC but the American company and long time telecast partner dissociated themselves from the awards and the event earlier this year. The award ceremony is yet to disclose its new telecast partner.

The deadline for tv shows and movie entry forms will be 15th of November, 2021 and the final nominations are set to be revealed on December 13.

In February of 2021, HFPA received major backlash after it was reported by the Los Angeles Times that there were zero black journalists among their then 87 members. Following this, actor Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globes trophies which he won for films ‘Jerry Maguire’, ‘Magnolia’ and  ‘Born on the Fourth of July’ that he won in the 1980s and 1990s. Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson also criticized HFPA. Many groups of actors and powerful publicists have been pressuring the HFPA to make necessary chances and add a diverse group of people of colour and women in their team members group or they will keep their clients away from the Globes and other HFPA activities.

Since then, HFPA has appointed a new team of board of directors and a new president, German journalist Helen Hoehne. The new board of directors team includes 12 members directors, 3 outside non members. They have also set up a credentials committee with five non members and an advisory board. HFPA mentioned that they have recruited 21 new members earlier this month.
