According to a renowned news daily, Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj died late Sunday, January 16th at his residence in Delhi after sustaining a heart attack. He was 83 years old when he died.

“He had been receiving medication for a month. He became winded about 12:15-12:30 a.m. last night, and we rushed him to the doctor within 10 minutes, but he was pronounced dead at the point. “Birju Maharaj’s granddaughter, Ragini Maharaj, informed a leading daily. The Kathak performer had a renal problem and was undergoing dialysis treatment.
During his lifespan, Pandit Birju Maharaj sported numerous crowns. He was a renowned musician, poet, and artist who was better remembered as a Kathak dancer. He was born as Brij Mohan Nath Mishra on February 4, 1937, from a renowned Kathak performing household and is the holder of the country’s second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. The revelations come only days following Pt Munna Shukla, his nephew and student, who died at the age of 78 after a short illness.
As per his official site, the Kathak icon was also a fantastic drummer, capable of playing practically any instrument with simplicity and perfection. He was particularly passionate about playing the Tabla and Naal. Birju Maharaj was a master vocalist who could do Thumri, Dadra, Bhajan, and Ghazal.
He was a brilliant narrator, weaving episodes from his experience into his presentations in order to engage the crowd. He was also intensely perceptive, and he usually had plenty to say about everyday events, amusing those around him with lifelike impersonations and colorful depictions.
He remarked last year in an interview with a newspaper that he “expresses himself in the best possible way he is motivated to and is grateful to have been able to don these varied crowns.” He went on to say that he simply sees these as distinct representations of his creativity. Through his art, whether it be dance, poetry, or other forms of art, an artist conveys his innermost sentiments.
