Despite the rise of COVID-19 cases in the state, Bollywood director and producer Karan Johar requested the Delhi government on December 30 to allow theatres to reopen. In a social media post, Johar asked the government to allow theatres to run, saying that they urge the Delhi Government to enable cinemas to operate. In comparison to other out-of-home settings, cinemas have a superior capacity to maintain a hygienic atmosphere while preserving social distance rules. This happened after the Producers Guild of India made a similar request, claiming that theatres create a secure environment for moviegoers.
KJo, on the other hand, has received backlash for the tweet, with netizens blasting him and asking that can someone please inform him he’s discussing humans. It’s not simply about equipping theatres. It’s about the people who will create a crowd, from their homes to movie theatres and beyond. A tweet stated that affluent individuals should broaden their horizons. Another tweet stated that movie theatres can be seen on digital platforms, but that people will perish if infection rates rise and oxygen becomes scarce.
Following a spike in COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variant’s appearance, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal ordered a yellow alert in the state on December 28, causing schools, universities, theatres, and gyms to close. Meanwhile, the Multiplex Group of India (MAI) issued a statement earlier in the day, which the association published on social media. On December 30, a team of MAI members met with Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia to solicit his assistance in reopening movie halls, expressing worries over filmmakers choosing for digital releases over theatrical releases. The first teaser for Liger was released recently, and we can’t wait to see it.
