Reactions to Mahesh Bhupathi-Leander Paes partnership based docu-series Break point streaming on Zee5

Break Point is the most recent and highly anticipated project streaming on  Zee5. It is a seven-episode docu-series based on the most legendary controversy of Indian tennis: the Bhupathi-Paes rift. The docu-series Break Point uncovers the trajectory and the various embedded mysteries and narratives around this Leas-Bhupathi divorce, so to speak, resulting from their gradual fallout.

Break Point is directed by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari and Nitesh Tiwari. These directors aren’t new to documenting the sports genre of cinema, as they have worked on sports-based dramas like Panga and Dangal, both of which are highly regarded by both the audience and the critics. This legacy of the directors is certainly not missed by the critics writing from various media outlets on the Zee5 docu-series Break Point. 

An important feature of this docu-series that critics have noticed and appreciated is that even though the resolution of the Bhupathi-Paes rift is no secret, the narrative techniques used by the filmmakers for the build-up is “rich with details, voices and match clips”, as an editor of a popular media outlet puts it.

The critics note the contradicting narrative expressions of Paes and Bhupathi are very cleverly constructed representative tools used for the docu-series’ diegesis. This is noted in the conflicting manner in which the two legends of Indian tennis interact with camera—Paes with a certain vigor, and Bhupathi with his characteristic mellowness. This dichotomy is at work throughout Break Point, and the critics have appreciated this play at different-but-united.

Paes and Bhupathi though starkly contrasting in nature, stood in harmony with each other as a duo for Indian tennis against the strongest and the most cunning duos of the international tennis community.

The critics have very much appreciated the nuance of the very legendary rift between Bhupathi and Paes, and its coverage of the various moments related directly to tennis and the various tenets of this rift among their colleagues and the tennis community, both national and international.

Altogether, the critics have celebrated the revival of interest about this rift, and tennis fans have appreciated the answers given in the docu-series to the various questions they had about the rift.
