Television is an integral part of every person’s life and from our childhood, till now it has always had an important place. There’s not a single person whose day is complete without watching television as this small screen has been managing to entertain all the fans and audiences from past so many years and does so even now.
Today even in television content and storyline is the only thing that can make or break the fate of any television show since our industry has become more progressive and content-oriented with emphasis on innovative and modern-day contemporary stories that are real and relatable to today’s youth as well. Where earlier big faces of tinsel town used to make any show hit or flop but today it is only the content and storyline that is responsible for making any show hit or a dud.
Today is World Television Day and is being celebrated to identify the increasing importance and impact of television on society and the ability of decision-making as well.
From being invented by a 21-year-old guy named Philo Taylor Farnsworth II from Utah to becoming the biggest source of information on a global level today, television’s growth seems to rise. During the lockdown, television helped to keep us sane by showing old shows but within the past so many years, there have been few shows that had been innovative and broke the clutter of monotony so now we take a look at them.
1. Alpviram: This iconic show aired on a popular television channel back in 1998 and had been produced by Shobhana Desai and this had been directed by veteran director Vipul Shah and starred Pallavi Joshi and Amir Bashir in lead roles. The storyline revolved around a girl Amrita who is raped while in a state of coma which leads to an unwanted pregnancy that can’t be terminated, and how it affects the lives of her loved ones.
2. Shanti: Aired in the early 1990’s ear on a renowned television channel and later on at another channel, this cult series starred Mandira Bedi as Shanti. The story’s plot revolves around the lives of two friends of the biggest Bollywood production house in the country and their names are Kamesh Mahadevan and Rajesh Singh who are talented writers, directors, and producers that live in the lavish Shanti Mansion with their respective families and behind the walls of Shanti Mansion lie the dark secrets of both the friends.
3. Hum Log: This was the first serial drama series in Hindi which is the story of an Indian middle-class family of the 1980s and their daily struggles and aspirations. At the end of every episode, veteran Hindi film actor Ashok Kumar used to discuss the ongoing story and situations with the audiences using Hindi idioms and limericks.
4. Bade Acche Lagte Hain: The show explored the lives of Priya Sharma (Sakshi Tanwar) and Ram Kapoor who both accidentally discover love after getting married and definitely this iconic television serial produced by TV czarina Ekta Kapoor was considered way ahead of its time as it shows a mature couple’s love story. The couple had been in their 40s and then discovering love fascinated the audience more.
5. Anupamaa: This cult and trendsetting serial Anupamaa produced by maverick TV producer Rajan Shahi is grabbing attention as it shows a journey of a married woman Anupamaa (Rupali Ganguly) who is taken for granted by her husband (Vanraj), children. She is shattered when she comes to know about her husband’s extra-marital affair with a younger woman named Kavya (Madalsa Sharma) and the show brings forth an entire journey of Anupamaa right from taking a big decision of separating legally from Vanraj to making her own identity, Anupamaa is loved by the audiences a lot.
