Harekrishna requests Chandra to find some sort of employment for his sons in Chandra’s house. Rani speaks up against Harekrishna’s request because it will hurt her father’s self-respect. While returning to the Marh family, Chandra and Rani stop seeing a procession of devotees taking a widow to perform ‘Sati’, the Hindu act of sacrificing a widow on her dead husband’s funeral pyre. Rani is shocked to learn about this ritual and prays to Goddess Kali in a nearby temple to save the helpless widow.
