The plot of the drama TV show revolves around Shyama, a girl with a dark complexion, who is determined to eradicate the stigma attached to her skin colour. She marries Nikhil, who is from a very affluent background, and faces constant discrimination given her complexion. Being a talented and passionate singer, Shyama sets out on a quest to carve an identity for herself. She believes her complexion is similar to that of Lord Krishna's. Her life undergoes a transformation after marriage when she sets out to pursue a career in music. Shyama's mother-in-law resents her, but gradually she begins treating Shyama more like a daughter and encourages her to follow her dream.

Shyama is the dubbed version of the popular Bengali TV show “Krishnakoli” that first aired on 18th June, 2018.
This TV show went on to become so successful that it was remade in Telugu as “Krishna Tulasi”, Bhojpuri as “Shyam Tulasi”, and in Tamil as “Karthigai Deepam”.
