Karunamoyee Rani Rashmoni was a great historical figure from 16th century Bengal, who we honour and remember to this day because of her immense efforts in philanthropic work which helped all of society to make phenomenal progress. Let’s look at some of the ways that this important leader helped empower women, who in those times, were treated as inferior citizens.

Watch an episode from Rani Rashmoni here:

1. Helped To Abolish Sati

When Rani Rashmoni was 11 years old, she got married to Babu Rajchandra Das, a zamindar. She was fortunate that he was a very forward-thinking man, who identified his wife’s intelligence and brilliance immediately. Babu Rajchandra Das was friends with Raja Ram Mohan Roy, another great reformist, who we owe the abolition of the terrible practice of Sati (where newly widowed women jumped to their deaths in the fire) to. Later in life, Babu Rajchandra Das introduced him to Rani Rashmoni, and they worked hand in hand towards this very cause and succeeded in vanquishing this practice.

2. Reformed Remarriage Laws For Women

Widowed women were not accepted as regular members of society, and were expected to end their own lives through Sati. Not only did Rani Rashmoni helped do away with this inhumane practice, but she also contributed further by changing remarriage laws for women at the root. She ensured that they could lead their lives after the loss of their husband, and could even remarry if they so chose to. Rani Rashmoni and Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar worked together to do this.

3. Constructed Babughat For Bathers

Rani Rashmoni built the iconic Babughat by the banks of the Hooghly river, so the people would have a safe place to bathe in every day, without fearing the wrath of the British oppressors or the discriminatory upper-caste priests. Women came here to bathe in peace, and today, Babughat stands as a memory of her generosity.
