Madhuri Dixit and Aamir Khan’s Dil won 8 filmfare awards and captivated the hearts of the audience. The film completes 30 years on 22 June 2020.

Bollywood’s two most loved genres are drama and romance, and the combination makes an unforgettable film. Dil starring Madhuri Dixit and Aamir Khan was released in the year 1980. Indra Kumar’s direction and Aamir-Madhuri’s sizzling chemistry made the film a blockbuster. The songs like Saansein Teri and Dum Dama Dum became the youth anthems. Udit Narayan’s Mujhe Neend Na Aaye and Khambe Jaisi Khadi Hai were the chartbusters of the year. The film also won eight Filmfare awards, declaring it the most successful film of the year! Madhuri and Aamir won the Best Actress and Best Actor awards, whereas Anupam Kher (playing Hazari – Aamir’s father) won the Best Supporting Role.

The film completes three decades this year. But even today Madhu and Raja’s romantic tale of tragedy and love sears our hearts open. Raja (Aamir Khan) and Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) are college mates. Raja’s father Hazari is an opportunistic man. He wants his son to marry a stinking rich girl who can bring a huge amount of dowry! But Raja’s mother Savitri is a gold-hearted woman who finally saves his relationship with Madhu. Raja and Madhu marry each other against the wishes of their parents but they believe that their love would help them sustain.

The best part of the film is the immense hate that Raja and Madhu share for each other at the beginning of the film. This hate somehow turns to insurmountable love that eventually makes them fall for each other and get married. The film explores the societal drawbacks of dowry and class system. The film also busts all stereotypes and makes love emerge as a winner. Perhaps this is the reason that the film was so popular back in the day!

There is a very interesting incident that occurred on the sets of the film. Madhuri Dixit was seen chasing Aamir Khan with a hockey stick in her hand. When she revealed what led up to this, she couldn’t help but crack with laughter. The actress said Aamir Khan loved playing pranks on sets and he was trying to read Madhuri’s palm and told her someone was going to fool her. When she began thinking, he spit on her palm!

Madhuri and Aamir are very close friends till date. Their film was so well appreciated and loved that the makers have confirmed that there would be a sequel to this film titled ‘Dil Again’! We can’t wait for it. What about you?
