Finally, after crossing so many hurdles, Sambhaji is getting the much-deserved title of ‘Chhatrapati’. The coronation ceremony of Rajyabhishek started from Shivaji Maharaj’s time. During this era, Chhatrapati was ruling an extensive and independent Maratha kingdom. To officiate the kingdom so the subjects and the outsiders could recognise him as the king, Shivaji Maharaj started this ceremony. This was successful with the support of his courtiers.

During the ceremony, the courtiers pour water from the gold jugs on the King’s head. But, have you wondered where the water comes from? This isn’t any normal tap water as it is collected from the sacred rivers which are flowing in India.

Rajyabhishek provided more legal validation to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s treaties. Moreover, as the empire is surrounded by the kings of various religions, the Maharashtrian rulers urged for a Hindu King, this transformed into Hindavi Chhatrapati.

At the ceremony, the royals and Brahmins of various regions are invited. They gift King exorbitant items. After the Rajyabhishek is done, King is supposed to take his best horse and distribute gifts amongst the commoners.

In Swarajyrakshak Sambhaji, we have seen Sambhaji’s insistence for calling Gaga Bhatt (who hails from Varanasi) to bless Rajyabhishek. This was followed by Anaji Pant, trying to stop Gaga Bhatt from coming for the ceremony. Sambhaji’s supporters wanted Gaga Bhatt to come because he had conducted Shivaji Maharaj’s Rajyabhishek.
