Ramayan is the mythological epic, spun out of the life of Lord Ram and his victory over the evil king, Raavan. From Ayodhya to Lanka, Lord Ram is known as the God of righteousness and valour. He is praised for his calm demeanour, and his justice. But Ramayan does not begin with Ram, it begins with Raavan’s story. 

Raavan, the king of Lanka, is greedy and wants to be richer, more powerful, and successful. After a tedious and long ‘tapasya’, Lord Brahma agrees to grant him a boon, Raavan asks for the boon of immortality, but Lord Brahma declines it and tells him that his life would be concentrated at his navel. However, he grants him the boon that no demon, gandharva, kinnar or god could ever kill him. So Lord Vishnu takes the form of a human and is born as Ram.

Ram’s birth on earth, and the following events were all planned by Lord Vishnu. Raavan was blessed with a boon that he would never be killed by anyone, but a human.

Sita’s role is also of utmost importance. Born as an avatar of Goddess Lakshmi, Sita is said to be a heavenly beauty and Lord Ram had his heart set on the doe-eyed beauty from the minute he spots her . Sita choose Ram as her husband at a Swayamvar organised by her father, King Janak, when Ram manages to fulfil the condition of lifting Shiva’s dhanush and  breaking it to pieces. Ram also promises Sita that he will never leave her.

Manthara’s plan of instigating Ram’s step-mother,Kaikeyi, works, and Ram is sent to vanvaas for 14 years. Sita reminds him of his promise and accompanies him to the forest, along with Lakshman.

Sita’s abduction was the beginning of Raavan’s end. He kidnaps Sita and Ram wages a war against him. Ram, Hanuman, Lakshman and the vaanar sena destroy Raavan’s Lanka, and kill the Asura king.

Raavan’s boon from Lord Brahma, is overpowered by Ram’s arrow. The  arrow strikes Raavan in his naval. Raavan is finally killed, and takes with him the evil he had been spreading. Ram’s righteousness is proved and he is declared the king.
