1. Stellar acting by a star-studded cast

Praktan, the superhit Bengali film from 2016 directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, was the highest grossing Bengali film of the year and won an International Film Business Award for several reasons! The title of the movie means ‘past’, and the story is about Sudipa and Ujaan who have experienced a failed marriage together. A chance encounter during a train journey leads them to delve back into their relationship and explore their history. Praktan will be streaming for absolutely free on Sunday, so make sure not to miss it! We tell you six reasons why you’ll definitely want to catch this here:

The cast of Praktan includes stalwarts like ProsenjitRituparna Sengupta, Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparajita Adhya, Sabitri Chatterjee, Saswata Chatterjee and Manali Dey, and each of them have delivered solid performances and portrayed each of their roles with skillful sensitivity and conviction. Their sense of empathy with the characters and the depth of emotions they manage to convey will leave you awestruck.

2. An exceptional script

A well-written script with an emotional plot centering around real human relationships will move you deeply. The way that it has dealt with this integral aspect of life is so poignant, that it will stir you like no other. Sudipa (played by Rituparna Sengupta) realises that she has not completely got over her past marriage or forgiven her former husband Ujaan (played by Prosenjit). Suddenly seeing him with his current family brings back many an old hurt and resentments as well as fond memories. The storyline has been constructed in a way that it is relateable and realistic. The dialogues are sharp, and the plot profound, raising several questions pertaining to modern-day relationships such as values and compromise, that are relevant in our lives today.

3. The ace direction

Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy, the famous duo who have previously directed popular films like Icche and Bela Seshe, have created nothing short of a masterpiece with Praktan. With every detail planned to the T and orchestrated, they have left no stone unturned and have been the key to making every element come together flawlessly.

4. The stylistic cinematography

The film has been shot strategically, with most of the present taking place in a train. The scenes shot from here will make you nostalgic about travelling long distances, especially those that capture Kolkata in its essence. Shots of the Writers’ Building, a sunset on Hooghly and a spectacular one of Victoria Memorial, will make you long to visit the City of Joy. Indeed, the cinematography is a sheer treat.

5. Some golden comedy

The film has also incorporated some extremely humorous angles which is sure to leave you in splits! One scene that even went viral on social media is the one where an elderly couple on the train (played by Soumitra Chatterjee and Sabitri Chatterjee) are not quite happy with the amenities on the train, and the wife summons an attendant to address her problems. She delivers an irate sermon to him in broken Hindi which is absolutely hilarious, and her terrible diction will be something that many Bengalis can relate to! The attendant is so intimidated by her vigour though, that he dares not admit to his incomprehension and simply nods at everything in order to be able to make a quick exit. This scene is pure comedy gold, so be sure to watch out for it!

6. The memorable music

One of the surprises in the film is the presence of Anindya Chatterjee and Upal Sengupta, who are the lead singer of the classic Bangla band Chandrabindu, along with none other than the inimitable Anupam Roy who shares a coupe on the same train. They jam together and provide some of the best music you will ever hear! In fact, Anupam Roy has directed the music in Praktan, songs like Kolkata and Tumi Jake Bhalobasho will fill your heart with bliss! So be sure to tune in on Sunday, and watch this brilliant film for free.
